The city
Vienna in brief.
Around 450 balls are held in Vienna between mid November and February, and the Opera Ball at the State Opera, on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, is among the last. The Vienna Philharmonic opens each year from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein on 1 January.
Outdoors is where Vienna spends the warmer months. The Wiener Festwochen take over its stages from mid May, the Philharmonic gives its open-air Summer Night Concert in the park at Schönbrunn in June, and evenings drift to the Heuriger of Grinzing and Nussdorf, taverns pouring wine from vineyards inside the city limits.
