Tel Aviv

Bauhaus balconies a few streets back from the Mediterranean

The city

Tel Aviv in brief.

White is the colour of central Tel Aviv: some 4,000 International Style buildings from the 1930s stand on and around Rothschild Boulevard, Dizengoff Street and Bialik Street. UNESCO listed this White City in 2003, and its flat roofs and curved balconies reward a slow walk.

Lunch is a matter for the markets, Carmel near the seafront and Levinsky with its spice shops in Florentin. Afterwards there is the sea, with an official bathing season from May to October along a promenade of named beaches, and a technology scene whose companies and venture funds cluster around Rothschild Boulevard.

Who the city draws

Architects and design students come for the Bauhaus streets, founders and investors for the technology scene around Rothschild Boulevard, and both tend to end the afternoon at the beach.
