Barcelona

Gaudí's towers above a grid that runs down to the sea

The city

Barcelona in brief.

Gaudí is the reason many people come to Barcelona, and 2026 added a new one: the Sagrada Família finished the exterior of its central tower, 172.5 metres high. Around it the Eixample grid runs downhill, past the Modernista facades of Passeig de Gràcia, to the old town and the sea.

Much of Barcelona's calendar happens in the street. Books and roses fill the pavements for Sant Jordi on 23 April, Primavera Sound and Sónar make June the month for music, and La Mercè closes the summer in late September with human towers in Plaça de Sant Jaume and a fire run on Via Laietana.
