The city
Mykonos in brief.
For about five months a year Mykonos is fully open. The season starts in May, peaks in July and August when the meltemi blows from the north, and winds down in October, and in that window the lanes of Chora and the south coast beaches do most of their business.
Delos and the beach are the two halves of a day here. A morning can go to the ruins of the sacred island, half an hour from the old port by boat, and the afternoon to the sand at Psarou or Ornos, while inland the village of Ano Mera gathers around the monastery of Panagia Tourliani.

The year in Mykonos.
- May and June
- The island opens for the season, with swimmable water and lighter winds before the peak.
- July and August
- High summer brings peak crowds and the meltemi, the dry north wind that sends swimmers to the sheltered south coast.
- 15 August
- The Dormition of the Virgin is celebrated at the monastery of Panagia Tourliani in Ano Mera.
- September to mid October
- The wind eases, the sea stays warm and the island quietens before the season closes.

Culture
Delos by morning boat
Boats leave the old port of Mykonos for Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990, where the sanctuary of Apollo and the remains of an ancient port city cover the island.

Lunch on the south coast
Psarou, Platis Gialos and Ornos face south, sheltered from the summer north wind, and their tavernas and beach restaurants serve lunch a few steps from the water.
Travel
Sailing to Rhenia
Day boats from Mykonos cross to uninhabited Rhenia, the island beside Delos, and anchor in its coves for swimming and lunch on board before the return.
Sport
Windsurfing on the meltemi
The north wind that empties the exposed beaches makes Ftelia and Kalafatis the island's windsurfing spots, at their strongest in July and August.
