The city
Paris in brief.
Haute couture comes first, in late January, and much of the Paris year follows from the fashion calendar: the women's collections in early March, couture again in early July, and the spring shows that run from late September into October.
What the collections leave free goes to sport and art. Roland-Garros takes three weeks from mid May on the clay beside the Bois de Boulogne; in late October Art Basel Paris fills the restored Grand Palais, and Paris Photo follows in November under the same glass roof.

The French Open is played on clay at Stade Roland-Garros, on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, from qualifying in mid May to the singles finals in early June.

Art Basel Paris brings around 200 galleries to the Grand Palais in late October, while the Fondation Louis Vuitton in the Bois de Boulogne and the Bourse de Commerce near Les Halles show contemporary art all year.

The covered Marché des Enfants Rouges on Rue de Bretagne in the Marais, widely described as the oldest in Paris, sets produce stalls beside counters serving lunch from Tuesday to Sunday.
