The city
New York in brief.
Within a few weeks each September, New York restarts: the US Open finishes in Queens, fashion week shows the spring collections, the Metropolitan Opera opens at Lincoln Center and The Armory Show brings more than 200 galleries to the Javits Center.
May is the other peak, when Frieze New York sets up at The Shed in Hudson Yards. Between the two, the 350 or so galleries of West Chelsea and the Greenmarket at Union Square carry the ordinary weeks, and the marathon crosses all five boroughs on the first Sunday of November.

Chelsea gallery afternoons
Around 350 galleries sit between West 18th and West 27th Streets and Tenth and Eleventh Avenues, among them Gagosian, David Zwirner and Pace, all within a walk of about ten blocks.

US Open in Queens
The US Open is played from late August to mid September at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, the last Grand Slam of the tennis year.

Opening night at the Met
The Metropolitan Opera opens its season at Lincoln Center in late September with a gala performance, the first of a run of productions that lasts into the following spring.

Union Square Greenmarket
The Greenmarket on the north and west sides of Union Square Park runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays all year, selling produce direct from regional growers.

Art dealers and collectors converge in May and again in late September, overlapping with the fashion and opera crowds, while late August belongs to tennis followers heading out to Queens.
